On a recent outing I visited the Parrot Park in Bochum, a unique place that combines exotic birds, rescue work and visitor interaction. The park is located on a 3,000 m² site and houses over 250 parrots in large free-flight aviaries, outdoor and indoor.
What struck me most was that many of the birds are not just “display animals”, but came from difficult situations: parrots whose previous owners neglected them, or birds needing long-term care in the park’s “residence” section. The park offers long-term and permanent care in specially built aviaries for these birds.
When I walked among the colourful plumage and the cheerful chatter of the parrots, it felt very alive: the birds moved freely, perched overhead, and were constantly looking for more food — the lively calls and bright colours made for great photo-moments. I stopped for a while near one of the feeding zones where visitors could observe the birds up close.
Although there is an admission free zone to the park, the café section attached to the park works by reservation and the proceeds go to help care for the birds that were given up, and health checks.
If you’re considering a photo outing or looking to capture colourful living portraits of parrots, this park offers plenty of inspiration. The only caveats: check the opening times (especially for special experiences and the café), and be mindful that some areas are more enclosed or require a reservation.
